English Language
At Woodgrove Primary, we believe every Woodgrovian can become an effective and confident communicator.

Anchored in the English Language Syllabus 2020, our English programmes aim to nurture empathetic communicators, discerning readers and creative inquirers. Through these programmes, Woodgrovians build a strong foundation in English, empowering them to communicate confidently across different purposes, audiences, contexts and cultures.
Guided by the syllabus principles (CLLIPS) and teaching processes (ACoLADE), our lessons are tailored to each child's readiness and interests, with a strong emphasis on discussion and collaborative thinking. Using Talk Moves, our students learn to ask thoughtful questions, share their ideas clearly, while engaging with print, non-print and digital texts to grow as 21st-century literate learners.

Building confidence through authentic speaking opportunities
Through our thoughtfully designed and progressive programmes in Woodgrove Primary School, Woodgrovians will be able to develop:
strong literacy foundations in phonics, reading fluency, spelling and grammar
effective communication skills for different purposes, audiences, contexts and cultures
critical reading and viewing skills to evaluate a wide range of texts
a love of the language through enjoyment of English and extensive reading
values and 21st century competencies as empathetic communicators, discerning readers and creative inquirers
With a strong foundation, a genuine love for the language and the confidence to express themselves, we hope to nurture every Woodgrovian to grow into a thoughtful, discerning young citizen who is able to communicate effectively with the world around them.
Tier 1 - Experience that spark curiosity and the love for Language
From their very first years with us, Woodgrovians are immersed in experiences that spark curiosity and a genuine love for language. Their love of reading is nurtured through platforms such as Scholastic and Little Red Dot, as well as storytelling sessions at the Woodgrovian Experience Wall led by teachers and reading ambassadors. As writers, Woodgrovians craft purposeful, well-organised texts through our Write it Right! packages and the Modified Language Experience Approach (MLEA). Through drama pedagogies in our English lessons, Woodgrovians find their voice through activities such as Choral Reading, Readers' Theatre, Hot-seating, Improvisation, Scriptwriting and Forum Debate — both in class and on stage.

Tier 2 - Expose. Spreading the joy of learning English
To promote student voice and a love of the language, we also organise activities that take English beyond the classroom. Through podcasts and our very own short reel series (known as Morning Buzz), Woodgrovians are encouraged to share their views and spread the joy of learning English with their peers.

Tier 3 - Excel. Stretching abilities, showcasing talents.
Beyond the school, Woodgrovians stretch their abilities and showcase their talents on external platforms such as the Wits & Words Inter-school Debate Championship, the Plain English Speaking Award, the Mythos Storytelling Competition and the GEB Creative Writing Portfolio. These competitions give our Woodgrovians authentic audiences and real opportunities to apply their speaking, storytelling, and writing skills. Through these platforms, every Woodgrovian who steps forward grows in confidence, competence and character.
