Learning for Life Programme (LLP): Shine Through Dance

Guided by our 3E approach, Expose, Experience and Express, students progressively develop knowledge and appreciation of diverse dance forms, while learning to communicate ideas, think critically and express themselves creatively. Through individual and collaborative dance experiences, Woodgrovians strengthen their confidence, resilience, cultural awareness and capacity to work with others, thus enabling our Woodrgrovians to be developed in the Emerging 21st Century Competencies

Values and character education form the foundation of Woodgrove’s Shine Through Dance programme. As Woodgrovians acquire diverse dance skills, create routines and perform collaboratively, they develop important Emerging 21st Century Competencies, including relationship management, resilience, mutual respect and responsible decision-making. Working towards shared goals strengthens their confidence, teamwork and ability to contribute meaningfully while appreciating the strengths of others. Through opportunities to showcase their learning at platforms such as Shine Day, Woodgrove Symphony and Celebration Day, students learn to express themselves with confidence, lead and support one another, and embody the qualities of a Learner, a Contributor and a Leader with Character.

The programme culminates in a collaborative and creative performance by the Primary 6 graduating classes, bringing their six-year Shine Through Dance journey to a meaningful close. Through the process of co-creating, rehearsing and presenting their performance to a live audience, Woodgrovians exercise responsible decision-making, demonstrate leadership and show courage in expressing themselves with confidence. This vibrant shared experience strengthens their sense of belonging, celebrates their growth and creates lasting memories of their Woodgrovian journey. Anchored in strong values and character, they emerge as future-ready learners who are prepared to learn, contribute and lead with confidence and purpose.

Overview of Learn For Life Programme – Shine Through Dance

1. P1 Creative Dance (movement exploration)

a)Techniques

Woodgrovians explore fundamental dance techniques through creative movement, developing body awareness, spatial awareness, balance, coordination and locomotor and non-locomotor skills. They experiment with different ways of moving using the elements of dance such as body, space, time and energy.

b) Creativity

Woodgrovians use their imagination to create movements inspired by stories, objects, emotions and music. They explore different body shapes, levels, pathways and speeds, demonstrating increasing confidence and variety in their movement vocabulary.

c) Character Development

Woodgrovians work collaboratively in pairs and groups, learning to share ideas, take turns and encourage one another. They develop self-confidence through movement exploration, demonstrate self-management during activities and show respect for their peers' ideas and performances.

2. P2 Ethnic Dance (cultural appreciation)

a) Techniques

Woodgrovians are introduced to a variety of ethnic dance forms, learning fundamental movements, rhythms and basic techniques that reflect different cultures and traditions. They develop coordination, posture and musicality while appreciating the uniqueness of each dance style.

b) Creativity

Woodgrovians explore creative movement inspired by different cultural dance forms and begin creating simple movement sequences using authentic dance vocabulary. They demonstrate variety while respecting the characteristics of each dance tradition.

c) Character Development

Woodgrovians work cooperatively in pairs and groups to learn and perform dances. They build confidence through performance opportunities and develop respect for cultural diversity, teamwork and responsibility while supporting one another's learning.

3. P3 Thematic Dance (dance as story telling)

a) Techniques

Woodgrovians apply fundamental dance techniques to communicate ideas and tell stories through movement. They develop greater control, coordination and expression while interpreting themes such as habitats, the school mascot or other meaningful concepts.

b) Creativity

Woodgrovians create movement phrases based on selected themes by combining different actions, formations, dynamics and levels. They demonstrate originality by expressing ideas through dance and incorporating appropriate spatial and timing concepts into their choreography.

c) Character Development

Woodgrovians develop confidence by sharing and presenting their creative ideas. They collaborate to choreograph thematic routines, contribute suggestions for improvement and demonstrate leadership by guiding their peers during rehearsals and performances.

4. P4 Hip-Hop (genre-specific technique)

a) Techniques

Woodgrovians are introduced to the fundamentals of Hip-Hop dance, focusing on rhythm, groove, body control, isolation, coordination and performance quality. They learn to execute movements with accuracy while demonstrating smooth transitions and musicality.

b) Creativity

Woodgrovians explore Hip-Hop vocabulary and create movement combinations using learnt techniques. They apply choreographic principles to develop short dance sequences that showcase creativity, style and performance confidence.

c) Character Development

Woodgrovians demonstrate resilience as they master increasingly challenging movements and routines. They work collaboratively, communicate effectively, contribute ideas and show leadership by supporting peers during practices and performances.

5. P5 Fusion Dance (integrating genres)

a) Techniques

Woodgrovians integrate movements from multiple dance genres, applying a range of dance techniques to perform cohesive and expressive routines. They demonstrate increased body control, coordination, balance and awareness of choreographic structure.

b) Creativity

Woodgrovians combine movements from different dance genres to create original choreography centred on a chosen theme. They apply choreographic principles to create, refine, memorise and perform increasingly complex movement sequences.

c) Character Development

Woodgrovians demonstrate teamwork by contributing ideas, listening actively and valuing the strengths of each group member. They exhibit leadership by guiding peers during rehearsals, resilience in overcoming challenges and confidence when performing for an audience. Communication and collaboration skills are strengthened through the creative process.

6. P6 Dance Choreography and Performance (culminating creation and showcase)

a) Techniques

Woodgrovians work collaboratively with their dance instructors to conceptualise, choreograph and rehearse original performance pieces. They integrate techniques and dance vocabulary acquired throughout the LLP, demonstrating technical proficiency, expression, coordination and performance quality.

b) Creativity

Woodgrovians apply choreographic principles to develop original performances based on selected themes. They create, refine, memorise and present complex choreographic works, making informed decisions about formations, transitions, music and stage presentation.

c) Character Development

Woodgrovians demonstrate maturity in teamwork by contributing ideas, supporting peers and taking ownership of their roles throughout the production process. They display confidence through public performances, perseverance in refining challenging routines and leadership by mentoring teammates and facilitating rehearsals. As the culminating experience of the LLP, Woodgrovians celebrate their growth as dancers, performers and leaders through a showcase that reflects their creativity, collaboration and passion for dance.
